The Dutchess Rail Trail

Veterans Memorial Mile

A peaceful mile of the Dutchess Rail Trail is to be dedicated to the veterans in Dutchess County, in honor of both men and women who have served and sacrificed for this country's freedom. The start and ending of the "Veterans Memorial Mile" will be marked by stone monuments and will be located in the Town of Wappingers beginning at Diddell Road and going south toward Sprout Creek.

Dutchess County Legislator Robert Weiss who represents District 12 in East Fishkill said, "As a member of the Legislature's Veterans Committee, I applaud the County Executive's initiative to recognize our local veterans who have served our country with honor. The Veterans Memorial Mile gives county residents and visitors alike an opportunity to remember and appreciate the contributions of the men and women in our armed forces. We look forward to working with the Dutchess Rail Trail Advisory Council to honor our veterans on the Veterans Memorial Mile."

If you cannot attend the dedication on June 30th, 2011 at 10:00 AM, Dutchess County Legislator Robert Weiss' speech follows....

We come here today, not to mourn, but to honor our veterans past, present and future, and to celebrate the opening of the Veterans Memorial Mile, on the Dutchess County Rail trail. This is a fitting tribute to those who have answered the call. Thank you County Executive Steinhaus, your staff, and all who created this memorial.

While my generation grows long in the tooth, the memory of comrades lost remains sharp. We need to hold dear those memories, salute and respect those who gave the final measure. Their sacrifice and the pain borne by their family, friends and a grateful county, ensured that we enjoy the blessings of freedom.

Now it is the duty of coming generations to stand the watch. I pray I have done my duty to bring those lessons learned to my children, grandchildren and all others I know who are the beneficiaries of the sacrifices of those heroes. Bless them all.

God Bless America and all freedom loving people wherever they may be...we must stand together as did our forefathers, to protect our progeny and the institutions we hold dear

This will be a stop on the rail trail where families may take a few moments to reflect, to learn and give thanks to those who have provided the freedoms that we so richly cherish.

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.

Dutchess County has answered the call in every major conflict in our nations history, from the Revolutionary War until today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I have confidence that in the future freedom loving men and women of Dutchess County will continue to answer the call.
